Sixties Girl Power Playlist | Music

I am an avid fan of 60s music and social history, so today's post is a 8 track playlist display Girl Power in different ways, sixties style.
These tracks below went against the grain of sweet sixties girl pop, proving girls had attitude and independence. A few of these tracks are themed around teenage tragedy (especially death) popular with sixties teens. They were also known colloquially as 'splatter platters' translating as death vinyl you could say.

Hope you enjoy this playlist:

  1. He's A Rebel - The Crystals
Produced by the infamous Phil Spector, this girl group were one of the most successful of the decade.

  2. My Boyfriend's Back - The Angels
The trio had a hoUS No1 single with 'My Boyfriend's Back' in 1963, about a girl rebuffing a boy and giving him a word of warning. Definitely girl power!

  3. Laisse Tomber les Filles - France Gall
1964 French song composed by Serge Gainsbourg (French songwriter & director)

  4. Give Us Your Blessings - The Shangri-Las
Queens of the 'splatter platter', teenage rebellion and angst themes, this 1965 song features emotional and haunting backing harmonies

  5. Stay Away From Bobby - The Sherry Sisters

  6. He Didn't Fool Me - Valerie Masters
1960s actress Valerie Masters was also a singer and this track was produced by the late Joe Meek (one of my favourite music producers of the era

  7. Leader of the Pack - The Shangri-Las
Possibly their most well-known hit, they were popular with teen girls and had a streetwise image females looked up to.

  8. Boy, What'll You do Then? - Denise & Company
A sixties girl group with guitars playing garage rock, a rarity!
